Tannat isn’t well expanded and known grape, there are only few places in the world growing it. Some of Tannat vineyards could be found around French Pyrenees, and the wine is mostly used for blending. Its typical firm, tannic structure improves the ability of wine to age.
Five siblings of Carrau family might very well be the only family in the world producing 100% Tannat wines today. Tannat grapes are hand picked, undergo 15 days long maceration and age in new French oak barrels for 12 additional months. Before its release, the wine ages one more year in the bottle.
Bodegas Carrau Tannat de Reserva can age for years but is approachable right now for a really special gourmet experience. Carrau’s Grand Reserva, called Amat, would be a wonderful value for somebody’s cellar. Thanks to its high tannin content, the aging potential of Amat is literally endless.

If you never tried Tannat, this Bodegas makes the best example of it. As a great alternative to highest quality Cabernet Sauvignons, this 5 years old Tannat is just slowly getting to its prime.
I decanted my wine and let it breath for more than two hours. When I got to it, I was rewarded by rich and lovely taste of raspberries, ripe plums combined with classy cedar from oak. The big tannins are now smooth and round, very important aspect for balance and quality of this wine. Tannat de Reserva, with a price tag under $ 15.00, is a serious “steal”.
