Botani 2009

Winemaker: Alois Kracher
Grape: 100% Moscatel de Alejandria
Region: Malaga

Botani 2010 just received 91 rating from Wine Advocate!

The first wines made in this winery in 2004 were an exquisite, sweet wines made from Moscatel de Alejandria Old Vines. This grape variety is traditionally used for production of raisins in this region.

Unique terroire treasure, discovered by one of the most prominent Spanish wine importers in the US, Jorge Ordóñez, lies nestled in the heart of the Axarquía region of Málaga.

To make the best out of the potential of soil and grape variety, he surrounded himself with group of entrepreneurs from Málaga, number 1 Austrian winemaker in sweet wines Alois Kracher and his son Gerhard.

To make sure that this project gets maximum attention even when Jorge isn’t in Spain, his sister Victoria runs the operation as general manager.

The hilly region of steep slopes and slate soil near the Mediterranean is considered one of the oldest viticulture areas in Europe. Very difficult terrain makes it virtually impossible to use any kind of machinery, therefore all the work in the vineyard, cultivation and harvest are done by hand.

Even for the vineyard’s helpers it’s not easy to clime up there and stand comfortably while working. The slopes range from 20-50% and greater, with an absolute height difference of 400 m.

Even if you are not a fan of sweet wines, these desert wines are absolutely unique, incredible and worth to try. Bodegas Botani Victoria, Seleccion Especial and Old vines are the three different desert wines made by this winery and I will write an review on those soon.

The newest reviews from Wine Spectator June 2010:

Jorge Ordoñez & Co. – Victoria 2007 – 93pts
Jorge Ordoñez & Co. – Old Vines 2007 – 91pts

Botani, however, is the only DRY white wine from this winery. This wine wasn’t officially reviewed yet, but I am sure it’s going to be a hit. Considering the very difficult terrain for the wine to grow, with soil, comprised of slate, very poor in nutrients, extremely low fields of old vines and extensive selection of grapes before pressing – here is the recipe for a very unique, absolutely delicious wine. Botani is fermented in 60% stainless steel and 40% French oak barrels.

Tasting notes:
Beautiful light yellow, straw color with greenish hints. Very rich aromas of ripe fruit, hint of honey, wild flowers, a bit of green apple and exotic fruits. Citrus and lime comes on the palate, acidic yet complimented with a lot of fruit flavors.

Complex concert of aromas and flavors is finished with mineral notes and the minimal sensation of oak. Unique, elegant, totally delicious wine that is a MUST try!
